FAMU Unveils ‘Ms. Amy’s Bake Shop’ At Cafe’

Amy “Ms. Amy” Andrews has served Florida A & M University’s dining services for more than 28 years.  On any given day, she can be seen preparing those sweet treats in the Residence Dining Hall. The aroma of her made-from-scratch pies, a variety of delectable cakes, sweet potato cheesecake, cookies, and muffins fill the air as Andrews works her craft. Her famous peach cobbler served on Fried Chicken Wednesdays is always a favorite.

Recently, Metz General Manager Jeff Kwolek unveiled the name of the bakery located in the newly renovated Residence Dining Hall in a brief ceremony attended by Rebecca Brown, interim CFO/vice president for Finance and Administration, Michael Smith, interim assistant vice president, Finance and Administration for Business and Auxiliary Services, along with members of the Business and Auxiliary Services team, and Metz employees.

“Everyone loves Ms. Amy and recognizes the great work she puts in every day,” Kwolek said. “She is a loyal, hard-working employee.  It just made sense to honor her in this way.”

Andrews was completely surprised as she received a round of applause with the big announcement of the Ms. Amy’s Bake Shop.

“My heart is joyful,” she said. “I’m just thankful for being recognized for the work I’ve done all these years. I started in 1993 and I’m still here.”

Andrews said she started baking when she was employed at Morrison’s Cafeteria.

“I was 36 years old when the baker at the time decided to leave. So, I stepped in and that’s when I realized how much I love it,” she said. “I worked at Morrison’s for 14 years.”

Aside from her baking skills, Andrews can also be found singing in the choir at St. Peter’s Church, where she is a faithful member. She also assists in the kitchen at the church whenever needed.

When asked what she enjoys most, Andrews replied, “I just love baking!”
