Florida A&M University (FAMU) won the 2023 Florida Blue Florida Classic 24-7, defeating Bethune Cookman University, cementing an undefeated Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season.
The game marked the culmination of a series of recruitment, alumni and outreach activities and set the stage for FAMU’s first SWAC Championship Game against Prairie View A&M University at Bragg Memorial Stadium on Saturday, December 2.
In the days leading up to the November 18 matchup at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium, President Larry Robinson, Ph.D., led three recruitment events at St. Petersburg College, Gibbs Campus, Tampa Tech High School in Tampa and the finale, at the Hyatt Grand Cypress, the host hotel. The Central Florida recruitment events attracted thousands of high school students from Pinellas, Hillsborough and Orange counties. “The Classic is really classic. This is ours. We split the revenue. This is the only classic like this in the country,” Robinson told the Thursday evening Night of Distinction gathering at Camping World Stadium. “It has been a wonderful partnership. This s a great event. It’s about economic development. It’s about the culture. It’s more than just a game. It’s a treat for us to come down here every year.”
During the Florida Classic Night of Distinction, FAMU team physician Dr. Garrison Rolle was recognized for his decades of dedicated service. Rolle of Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic. Dr. Rolle has been the Rattler team physician for 27 seasons.
Among the highlights of the festivities was President Robinson’s appearance at the Florida Classic Kick Off Luncheon Friday. Wearing boxing gloves and a robe, Robinson introduced himself as The Memphis Mauler as he traded verbal jabs with BCU acting President William Berry, Ph.D.
Since it was moved to Orlando, the Florida Blue Florida Classic has resulted in about $30 million economic impact for the Central Florida region annually. Revenue from the event also provides a major boost to the FAMU and BCU athletic departments.
