Florida A&M University (FAMU) would like to alert the community about impending inclement weather that could impact the Tallahassee and Big Bend region late Wednesday into the early hours of Thursday morning. In addition, lower than normal temperatures and breezy weather are expected to add a fall feel to weekend Homecoming 2021 festivities.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee Office, a strong cold front is forecast to push across the area late Wednesday night into Thursday. A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is possible ahead of this front. The Tallahassee area is at slight risk (level 2 out of 5) for wind gusts 50 to 70 miles an hour and a few tornadoes.
The weather system is expected to affect the western Panhandle early Thursday morning before sunrise; Tallahassee and the Big Bend could see the storm effects Thursday morning and early afternoon. The North & Central Florida Peninsula could be impacted Thursday afternoon/evening; South Florida – Thursday night.
In Tallahassee, the University is taking precautions to ensure the campus is safe by removing tents, securing resources, and other vulnerable outdoor structures ahead of the inclement weather. For Thursday, outdoor Homecoming events have been moved indoors; however, the 2021 Homecoming festivities on Friday and Saturday are not expected to be impacted by the weather.
Faculty, students, and staff are asked to exercise caution for downed utility wires, branches, and other debris on their way to campus Thursday morning. Those traveling to Tallahassee for Homecoming should be mindful of potentially hazardous conditions along the storm’s path. Since weekend temperatures will be cooler than normal – Friday and Saturday highs are forecast to be 66 and 68 respectively – those planning to attend Homecoming festivities should dress accordingly.
