FAMU Harambee Festival Returns to Cascades Park

Florida A&M University’s Harambee Festival returns to Cascades Park on Saturday, February 24 with a lineup that includes Tallahassee-bred musician and producer Darryl Tookes and Friends, the RAA Steel Band, A Few Good Fellas, Tallahassee Nights Live and other acts.

 

 

The 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. event is an eagerly anticipated fixture on the city’s Black History Month calendar.

“Each February my wife Sharon and I look forward to joining thousands of others who converge on Cascades Park for the Harambee Festival,” said FAMU President Larry Robinson, Ph.D. “This annual event allows citizens greater exposure to our academic programs and activities, while reinforcing the strong cultural bonds between FAMU and the larger community.”

In addition to live entertainment from local favorites such as the Brownsville Preparatory Institute students, the daylong festival will feature dancers and storytellers highlighting African culture, music, and art. There will be vendors selling traditional and modern goods, and community spirit celebrating African American contributions to Tallahassee and beyond. Admission is free.

Representatives from the University’s more than a dozen colleges and schools also will be on hand to discuss recruitment opportunities with community college and high school students, and their parents.  

 

Keith Miles, director of the FAMU Office of Communications, calls Harambee a signature Black History Month event for his staff, the University, and the community.

“Harambee brings people together in a celebration,” Miles said. “It’s where college, culture, and collegiality combine. We want to fill Cascades Park with food, fun and festivities.”
