Current Academic Learning Compacts
Academic Learning Compacts are meant to account for student achievement in baccalaureate
degree programs in the State University System. The purpose of ALCs is to establish
policy guidelines and procedures for universities, through their bonds of trustees,
to develop and implement Academic Learning Compacts to account for student achievement
in baccalaureate degree programs in the State University System.
Each Compact includes statements of the core student learning outcomes in the areas
of content/ discipline knowledge and skills, communication skills, and critical thinking
skills that program graduates will have adequately demonstrated prior to being awarded
the baccalaureate degree. ALCs answer three basic questions: What will students learn
by the end of their academic programs? Have they learned what they have been taught
by their professors? How do we measure these quantities?

The Availability of Academic Learning Compacts to Students:
The University is responsible for providing all of its prospective and current students
with clearly defined Academic Learning Compacts, which are written in a user-friendly
format. Academic programs will distribute their Academic Learning Compacts to students
through the University website. The Academic Learning Compacts will serve to document
the expected learning outcomes to be achieved by every student matriculating through
his/her program. Periodic measurements of the extent to which student learning has
taken place will be accomplished by the use of tools, such as rubrics, products of
student work, and other course-embedded assessments. Faculty in each program, to
enhance student achievement, will use these various measurements. The reports generated
by these various measurements will be used to make program enhancements.
It is state-mandated for the undergraduate programs to provide students with ALCs.
A link to the appropriate College/School ALCs should be provided to the student via
course syllabi. A simple statement in the syllabus will suffice to provide information
about the ALCs for each degree program. Here a sample statement that can be used to
place in the syllabus regarding ALC. Just add in the name of the specific degree program.
Academic Learning Compacts (ALCs): This course falls under the courses offered in the (name of degree Program) and is thus covered by the associated Academic Learning Compacts. ALCs answer three basic questions: What will students learn by the end of their academic programs? Have they learned what they have been taught by their professors? How do we measure these quantities?
