Collegiate Licensing

Licensing is a written agreement between FAMU, Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) and the licensee, whereby the licensee is granted permission to produce products bearing the marks of FAMU.

Florida A&M University (FAMU) became a member of the College Licensing Company (CLC) in 2000 to:

  • help protect the University’s brand/trademark;
  • help promote the University; and
  • help generate funds to assist the Athletics Department

CLC serves as a licensing agent for the University and is responsible for maintaining the licensing program, such as processing the licensing applications, collecting royalty payments, enforcement of trademarks, as well as seeking to find new marketing opportunities for the University.

Who Needs a License?

Anyone that wishes to produce products bearing the marks of FAMU must obtain a license to do so.

How to Become Licensed?


Contact the Collegiate Licensing Company if you are interested in obtaining a license to produce merchandise bearing the name, mark, logo, etc. of Florida A&M University at (770) 956-0520 or visit their website at www.clc.com and follow the instructions for obtaining a license. You must provide detailed information about your company and the product that you wish to market.

Failure to obtain a license through CLC and approval through the Office of Communications/Licensing can and will result in the seizure of all non-licensed and non-approved merchandise bearing any of Florida A&M University’s trademarks.

What is the Process?


Upon the approval of your licensing application, you may submit artwork designs displaying the marks, logo, name, slogan, symbol, word(s), letters, numbers or combination of any of these that is directly associated with or to the University for approval. We will at that time evaluate each product, and approval must be given of the completed product sample before any merchandise can be produce for retail sale.

This process will protect all parties, including the University from future liability, by ensuring that every product bearing the institution’s name or logo is used appropriately.

What is a Trademark?

A trademark is any mark, logo, name, slogan, symbol, word(s), letters, numbers or combination of any of these that is directly associated with or to the University. It is considered an infringement of the University’s trademark rights to create any artwork design that could cause public confusion due to the likeness or similarity of FAMU’s trademarks.

Florida Statute 831.05: Vending goods or services with counterfeit trademarks or service marks - This statute makes it a third degree felony for the possession or sell of merchandise with counterfeit trademarks valued at $1,000 or more.  Under this statute, it is a first-degree misdemeanor if merchandise is valued under $1,000.  Violations will result in the confiscation of all illegal merchandise and can result in arrest.   

Florida A&M University does NOT approve or endorse the use of its marks in conjunction with distasteful designs, or for the purpose of advertising products related to alcohol and tobacco, illegal activities, firearms, religious or political associations, etc.

NOTE: The marks of Florida A&M University are controlled under a licensing program administered by The Collegiate Licensing Company. Any use of these marks will require written approval from The Collegiate Licensing Company.

The licensing costs may vary, depending upon the type of license that you may be applying for.  For example, you may apply for a standard license, a local/in-state license or a restricted license. Cost associated with getting licensed will be provided when completing your application.
