The Alfred "Al" Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center is a state-of-the-art multi-purpose facility that is North Florida's preeminent sports and entertainment venue. Our staff is committed to providing the highest standard of service and ensuring the best possible experience for you and your guests.

The Lawson Center's hosting capabilities are not limited to sporting events. We specialize in parties, galas, concerts, meetings, and conferences. The Lawson Center has a variety of spaces designed to accommodate your event and an experienced staff that will work to ensure you and your guests have a memorable experience.

The Florida A & M University Alfred Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center Teaching Gymnasium was built with Public Education Capital Outlay (PECO) funds and was inaugurated April 8th of 2009. It is the home of the FAMU College of Education's Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

Al Lawson Facility Features

  • The Lawson Center is primarily an educational facility. It houses four basketball/volleyball courts on the arena floor, several classrooms, a computer lab, a human performance laboratory, a hydrotherapy room with a Swimex therapeutic pool and sports training area, and a 3,000-square-foot HPER fitness center. It also houses faculty and department offices.
  • The Lawson Center hosts FAMU Convocations and Commencement Exercises. It is also the home of the Rattler Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams and the Volleyball home games. The main arena area features bleacher seating for 8,470 people, a video scoreboard, and a first-class arena sound system.
  • Other facility features include an 80-person banquet room overlooking the arena, a dance studio with a sprung floor, meeting rooms, interview rooms, and classrooms that may be converted into sky boxes.
  • When not in use for instructional or athletic purposes, the Lawson Center is made available for other events. Concerts, entertainment events, and athletic tournaments find a welcoming space under its arched roof.

Media credentials must be approved by the promoter a minimum of one week prior to event day.

To request a media credential for a FAMU sporting event, please email a formal request to Josh Padilla, Director of Sports Information or call (850) 599-3200.
