Beyond Black Beauty

This production is a powerful multi-part installation that delves into the politics of beauty, identity and self-determination within African American History.

Opening Spring 2025

The exhibit features an immersive experience titled, "Miss FAMU and the Aesthetics of Excellence," which illuminates the Black College Queen tradition—a profound intersection of educational aspiration and collective image crafting, despite the pressures of beauty standards promoted within dominant culture. This production also includes Sandro Miller's "Crowns: My Hair, My Soul, My Freedom," in which viewers are invited to appreciate Black women's hair as a symbol of resistance and autonomy by way of a striking presentation of portraits from the internationally acclaimed artist. Finally, The Black Archives African American Doll Collection documents the role of image-making as a political instrument used by African American families to reinforce the intrinsic of value of the human self to their children.

Curated by Kimberly Brown Pellum, Ph.D., Aja Roache, Ph.D., and Timothy A. Barber, this installation offers an insightful journey through historical and contemporary narratives that African American women have woven in their quest to define beauty for themselves.

Opening 2027, we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Alumnus Will Packer’s 2007 release of the movie “Stomp the Yard.”

HBCUs have a long and storied history of Greek organizations that play a significant role in campus life.  These organizations often focus on community service, academic excellence, leadership development, and social activities.

Meek-Eaton Black Archives will explore Greek Life on the Florida A&M University campus by displaying movie props, materials, and costumes donated from the movie while honoring the history and legacy of active Sororities and Fraternities on the college campus over the years.
