Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (MGIB-AD)
The Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (MGIB-AD) is the GI Bill in use before the Post-9/11 GI Bill. It provides a flat monthly payment (instead of a percentage) of up to 36 months of education benefits to eligible veterans.
MGIB-AD Categories
Under the MGIB-AD, there are different categories or chapters, each offering slightly different benefits.
➤ Entered active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985.
➤ Had military pay reduced by $100 a month for the first 12 months.
➤ Continuously served for 3 years.
➤ Continuously served for 2 years on a 2-year contract.
➤ Continuously served 4 years if you entered the selected reserve within a year of leaving active duty (called the 2-by-4 program).
➤ Entered active duty before Jan. 1, 1977.
➤ Served at least 1 day between Oct. 19, 1984, and June 30, 1985, and stayed on active duty through June 30, 1988 (or June 30, 1987, if you entered the selected reserve within one year of leaving active duty and served four years).
➤ Had an entitlement left from the Vietnam-Era GI Bill on Dec. 31, 1989.
➤ Not eligible for MGIB under Category I or II.
➤ On active duty on Sept. 30, 1990, and separated involuntarily after Feb. 2, 1991.
➤ Or involuntarily separated on or after Nov. 30, 1993.
➤ Or voluntarily separated under either the Voluntary Separation Incentive (VSI) or Special Separation Benefit (SSB) program.
➤ Before separation, you had military pay reduced by $1,200.
➤ On active duty on Oct. 9, 1996, and had money remaining in a Veterans' Educational Assistance Program (VEAP) account on that date and elected MGIB by Oct. 9, 1997.
➤ Or entered full-time National Guard duty under title 32, USC, between July 1, 1985, and Nov. 28, 1989, and elected MGIB during the period Oct. 9, 1996, and July 9, 1997.
➤ Had military pay reduced by $100 a month for 12 months or made a $1,200 lump-sum contribution during time in service.
➤ Entered active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985.
➤ Received a high school diploma or equivalent or, in some cases, have accrued 12 hours of college credit before the end of the first obligated period of service.
➤ Received an honorable discharge.
➤ Continuously served for three years or two years if your contract obligation was met, or two years if an obligation to serve four years in the selected reserve and entered selected reserve within a year of leaving active duty.

Transferring The MGIB-AD to The Post-9/11 GI Bill ®
You may be able to transfer your MGIB-AD to the Post-9/11 GI Bill. To do so, you must meet the criteria for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and apply at eBenefits.

MGIB-SR Eligibility Requirements
You must be in good standing with a drilling selected reserve (Guard) unit and meet the following requirements:
➤ After June 30, 1985, you signed a six-year obligation to serve in the selected reserve.
➤ You completed Initial Active Duty for Training (IADT).
➤ You received a high school diploma or GED before completion of IADT.
