Mira Lowe is dean of the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication at Florida A&M University.
During her 30-plus-year career in media, she has led and managed award-winning newspapers in New York, iconic magazines in Chicago, a global digital and broadcast outlet in Atlanta, and a public-media news center in Gainesville. As dean, Lowe serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of FAMU’s journalism, graphic design, public relations, and mass communications programs. Prior to FAMU, Lowe was assistant dean for Student Experiences and director of the Innovation News Center at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications. She also served as senior editor at CNN Digital, where she managed the planning, execution and programming of Features content and special projects across a global portfolio. She made history as editor-in-chief of JET magazine, becoming the first woman to helm the venerable African American newsweekly.
Lowe also served as assistant managing editor of JET’s sister publication, EBONY magazine, at Johnson Publishing Company. Her print experience extends to newspapers, including Newsday in New York, where she worked as an editor and recruiter.
She has a passion for training students, which began as a counselor and teacher of TRIO programs serving low-income and first-generation college-bound students in New York City.
Dean Lowe has taught classes and guest-lectured at Columbia University, York College, Loyola University Chicago, Northwestern University, and Marquette University.
