About Me


Sandra Suther, PhD is a Director and Professor in Economic, Social & Administrative Pharmacy in the College of Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences & Institute of Public Health at Florida A&M University. She received her master’s in medical Anthropology from the University of Texas at San Antonio and her doctorate in Health Education from Texas A&M University. Dr. Suther has over 20 years’ experience conducting community-based participatory research with a focus on social determinants and inequities in health care. Her research includes racial and ethnic disparities in access to genetic technology, as well as concerns about the misuse of genetic testing, confidentiality, and distrust in the medical system. Dr. Suther has been evaluating health programs and projects for over 18 years. She has served as evaluator for 16 funded programs (Texas Department of Health, Florida Department of Health, Alabama Department of Public Health, HRSA, NIH, NSF, Howard Hughes Medical Institute). Currently, Dr. Suther is the community outreach and engagement core leader for the NIH/NCI funded Florida-California Cancer Research, Education & Engagement (CaRE2) Health Equity Center as well as the NIMHD/NIH funded FAMU Center for Health Disparities Research (CHDR) U54 Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI).

    The overarching goal of the FAMU RCMI is to establish an interdisciplinary Center to address minority health and health disparities while building on and enhancing the competitiveness of faculty-led health disparities research to attract extramural funding. The CEC focus is to develop, enhance, and strengthen relationships and partnerships with our community-based organizations to create a sustainable research and outreach environment for eliminating cancer disparities.

    COVID-19 IMPACT ET: Increase minority participation and clinical trial enrollment through education and training.

    The overall goal is to discover possible causes of low enrollment of racial and ethnic minority populations in COVID-19/COVID-19 variant clinical trials and determine solutions to overcome low participation.
