I was born in 1968 in Tallahassee, Florida and attended Florida High School from second grade to graduation. I started learning Spanish in Middle School and, after working at a record store for a few years, picked it up again when I started college. There, I studied Spanish and Anthropology. I graduated from FSU with a double major, and two years later finished a Masters in Spanish Literature.
I have traveled in Asia and Latin America, including a summer of linguistic field-work with Ch’ol Mayas in Chiapas, México. I have been teaching at FAMU for about twenty years, first as an adjunct and now full-time.
