About Me

Dr. Monekka Munroe is a faculty member in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice and has been teaching in higher education for 14 years. She is an Early Childhood Trauma expert, and published author. Her current research interests include childhood trauma and female incarceration.

Adding to this body of research, she’s penned a chapter in the criminal justice textbook, The Disparate Treatment of Black Youth in the Juvenile Justice System. Chapter 14, The Acceptance of Rape Culture and Sexual Violence Against Black Girls in Athletics and Entertainment, was written to bring awareness about an issue that she describes as often overlooked, disrespected, and dismissed.

In 2016, Dr. Munroe was selected as a TED Talk presenter, where she confidently stood in the center of the famous red circle and discussed “Criminal Injustice.” To an audience of over 800 attendees, she bravely told the story of how her life journey led to a vast interest in the criminal justice system.
