About Me


Dr. Chérise M. Murphy-McNear is a native of Chicago, a Global Citizen, and an Educator who mentors and trains students in Counselor Education and Supervision. She sits on the Executive Board of Florida Counseling Association, was the Past President of the FCA-Florida Association of Marriage & Family Counseling division, and has an established private practice in both Tallahassee & Tampa, FL. 

Dr. Murphy is the Director of Clinical Training for the CMHC and School Counseling Program here at Florida A&M University.

She has taught courses in Counselor Education and Supervision for over 13 years at CACREP accredited counseling programs in Chicago, Seattle, and Florida, as well as served as the Director of Clinical Training for Masters and Doctoral level students in CMHC and MFT counseling programs across the nation. Her interactive style with students is scholar-practitioner based, focusing on both experiential learning and dialogue about real-life experiences, and how learned skills can be applied to these scenarios. Dr. Murphy is a Board Qualified Supervisor and holds licensure as a Mental Health Counselor in Florida.


Work History


Dr. Murphy’s research has focused on human behavior and development in the context of relationships. She has studied blended family structures and partner behaviors that will promote a cohesive family environment and positive outlook for relationship satisfaction. Her clinical work has focused on women and children in the areas of health and human development within the context of systemic oppression, traditional and non-traditional relationships.  She has worked with and studied women and children impacted by HIV-AIDS, as well as the impact COVID-19 has had on female-headed households within BIPOC communities. Dr. Murphy has received recognition from Learn & Serve America (LSA) for national and community service sponsored by President Barack Obama’s Commission on Higher Ed Community Service Honor Roll for Keeping Families Safe.
