The Florida A&M University (FAMU) President’s Recruiting Tour makes stops in Mobile and Birmingham, Alabama, and Macon, Georgia, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 9-11.
The tour is being held as the University steps up efforts to complete the Class of 2026 and continues its push to be listed among U.S. News & World Reports’ Top 100 public universities. In 2021, FAMU ranked 104, the highest ranked public Historically Black College and University (HBCU).
At 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, FAMU President Larry Robinson, Ph.D., will headline the event at Bishop State Community College, 351 North Broad Street, Mobile.
On Thursday, the tour stops in Birmingham, home of current FAMU National Alumni Association President Col. Gregory L. Clark. The recruitment event at Ramsay High School, 1800 13th Ave. South, Birmingham, begins at 9:30 a.m.
On Friday, the tour concludes in Macon, Georgia, where the recruitment event begins 1 p.m. at Central High School. Each event is highlighted by a live performance of the FAMU Connection Troupe. Representatives from the University more than a dozen schools and colleges will staff information booths during the event.
The three-city, two-state recruitment tour comes on the heels of the Black College Expo in Los Angeles and stops in St. Petersburg and Jacksonville, Florida, earlier this year. The University is stepping up its in-person recruiting after being forced to abandon the events during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour provides a setting for President Robinson, Vice President of Student Affairs William E. Hudson, Jr., Ph.D., and other senior administrators and students to meet in person with alumni, parents and prospective students, which is a key element of the recruitment ritual.
Robinson usually shares his educational journey from LeMoyne-Owen College, a small private HBCU in his native Memphis, Tennessee, to earning a doctorate in nuclear chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He also highlights prominent FAMU alumni such as Kim Godwin, president of ABC News, movie mogul Will Packer, St. Paul, Minnesota Mayor Melvin Carter and others as he touts the message that students can get anywhere from FAMU.
