Four Florida A&M University students each received $2,500 scholarships from the Southern Area of The Links.
The students are: Jayden Matheny, a first-year business administration student Lake Mary, Florida; Makayla Hall, a first year biology pre-medicine student Macon, Georgia; Jasmine Green, a fourth year criminal justice student of Miami; and Jewell Crouch, a third year criminal justice student of Titusville, Florida.
They are among 25 students who received scholarships from the Southern Area of the Links as part of a decades old initiative to encourage students to attend Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Funding for the scholarships came from members’ donations.
Each of the scholarship recipients will be expected to give 20 hours of service per semester to the community as a show of good faith in accepting the $2,500.
“I am proud that these young people will be given assistance and will give back to the Tallahassee community as they have given service in their hometowns,” said Alexis Roberts McMillan, president of the Tallahassee Chapter of the Links, who participated in the check presentation with the students and President Larry Robinson, Ph.D., at Lee Hall on Wednesday.
McMillan said the students will assist the Tallahassee chapter in various community service projects such as addressing obesity and mental health and the mentoring program associated with the organization’s annual beautillion.
The Southern Area includes chapters in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, and the Bahamas. This past summer The Links hosted an HBCU high school tour conducted by Kelley Bailey of Tallahassee. Several other Schools were virtually toured. President Robinson addressed the gathering of high school students and parents via Zoom.
