FAMU Cancels Classes at Central and South Florida Sites Ahead of Tropical Storm Nicole

9 a.m. Wednesday update:

Florida A&M University (FAMU) is actively monitoring the path of Tropical Storm Nicole. As a result of the storm’s predicted path northward, the College of Law has announced the cancelation of classes Wednesday and Thursday. No classes were scheduled for Friday, Nov. 11 in honor of the Veterans Day holiday. The Brooksville Agricultural and Environmental Research Station (BAERS) is closed Wednesday.

The College of Law Building, including the Library, will close at 9:30 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) Nov. 8. The law school is expected to resume normal operations on Monday, November 14.

The College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Institute of Public Health, South Florida Pharmacy Practice Center (Davie) office will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Student pharmacists at all practice centers with the exception of Orlando are to report to their respective sites as directed by their preceptor. Orlando student pharmacists will be excused on Thursday.

President Larry Robinson, Ph.D., and the Emergency Management team will continue to monitor Nicole closely and will make announcements regarding the Tallahassee main campus, accordingly.  Meanwhile, employees are removing banners, tents and other temporary structures ahead of the weather system’s strong winds.

Tropical Storm Nicole is continuing to strengthen and now has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph. Nicole should make landfall late Wednesday night as a hurricane in east Central Florida, north of Port St. Lucie County. The system has a large wind field and breezy conditions have already begun and tropical storm-force winds could arrive in the Big Bend region as early as Thursday morning. The Tallahassee region should expect to see some impacts from Nicole through Thurday afternoon. As the storm system proceeds north through Georgia, weather conditions should improve on Friday.
